Global problems such as climate change and global warming have been a serious issue for a long time. There are many ways to solve these global problems. One of the way to reduce or even solve these problems is by earth hour. Earth hour is an event where cities and/or countries switch off their lights for a whole hour. It is an event held by WWF on March 2007. Last year, more than 7.000 towns and cities in 154 countries took part in this earth hour event.

Earth hour is a wonderful event that helps solve global problems. This event has lots of benefits such as raising awareness and saving electricity. Earth hour also helps to decrease the pollution and reduce the effects of global warming.

The main point of earth hour is mainly to raise awareness about global problems. These global problems are very dangerous and harmful for our environment. Earth hour is made so that people both child and adult, can realize that global problems are rising, and we need to help solve these problems. We need to start helping little by little.

Other than raising awareness, earth hour also helps to save electricity. Earth hour has a reduction of 10.2% in energy consumption across the cities and countries. In Sydney, more than 2.2 million residents and over more than 2.100 businesses switched off their lights and their non-essential appliances. Jakarta reported that the campaign has saved electricity up to 170 megawatts about 249 million Rupiahs.

By saving electricity, earth hour can also help by decreasing our pollution. Especially, air pollution. Since, the lights have been turned off and almost all of the electrical appliances, the amount of fossil fuels used are also reduced. In Jakarta, this event has reduced the amount of carbon emissions up to 122 tons of CO2 (carbon dioxide). This reduces the amount of air pollution making the air cleaner and fresher.

Last but not least, earth hour also helps to reduce the effects of global warming. Global warming happens when the layers of the atmosphere becomes thinner due to the release of too many greenhouse gases. Scientist predicts that our climate change could heat up to as much as six-degrees Celsius if our carbon emissions are not cut back. Earth hour helps reduces this by turning off our electrical appliances.

From all of these facts, we can see that earth hour is very beneficial for each and everyone of us. It raises awareness, saves electricity, decrease pollution and even reduces the effect of global warming. We need to save the earth for all of the global problems. Everyone can help little by little, by participating in the wonderful event, earth hour.
